3 Tips To Reduce Anxiety

Anxiety can really throw a wrench in your day, plans and most importantly your health. Whether it’s anxiety about the future or events in the past, it robs you of the joy of the present moment.

Are we surprised though? We live in a culture of go, go, go and constant stimulation from every angle.

But don’t worry girl, I got you!

Here’s 3 things that I do to alleviate my anxiety and reorient myself back to peace:

1. Do a mind-muscle workout (think: pilates, yoga, dancing)

These workouts challenge your brain to be fully engaged throughout the entire workout – aka: getting out of your mind and into your body. These types of classes require you to think about the muscle being worked instead of focusing on whatever was troubling you off the mat. Here’s a class that will challenge you and calm your mind. Squeeze those muscles, keep that core tight and let your worries sweat out.

2. Find a quiet space and breathe it out.

Whenever we’re feeling anxious we often lose our breath and feel like our heart is about to beat out of our chest. Taking time to slow down our breathing and tapping into our parasympathetic nervous system is a game-changer. This controlled breathing will signal to your brain and body that you’re okay and can relax. I do this meditation every morning to start my day off present and peaceful.

3. Go for an unplugged nature walk

That’s right, no headphone and consider leaving your phone at home (or on silent.) Take this time outside to feel and appreciate the atmosphere. Breathe in the fresh air. Let the sunshine kiss your face. Smell the beautiful flowers in bloom. Listen to the birds singing. Smile at strangers you pass. Focus on connecting with nature and take mental gratitude notes throughout your walk. This will put you in the present moment, where anxiety cannot exist. Here’s a resource to find trails in your area.

I hope that this list is helpful for you and empowers you to take positive, healthy action when anxiety creeps in.
