How to Kick Up Into Handstand Class

POSE OF THE DAY

Standing Splits on the Wall

Exercise: Hold this pose for 10 breathes, on each side.

Modify: 1. Place a block under each hand; 2. Bend the standing leg as much as you need to

Standing Splits on the wall is our pose for today, and this is an important pose to master, because as you see today’s video, this is your starting point for kicking up into handstand. If this pose is off, then you’ll have a difficult time finding your center in handstand.

It’s important to remember to keep the arms straight and strong, hips level, ribs in, and legs engaged. I’ve been talking a lot about full body integration – when the whole body works together as one unified force, and this is a perfect example.

Directions of energy: 

  • Press the palms into the ground
  • Actively press the lifted leg’s foot into the wall. This is the leading foot when kicking into handstand, so exert as much energy through the foot as you can!

Benefits of this pose: 

  • Strengthens your upper body (triceps, shoulders, serratus anterior)
  • Strengthens your forearms and hands
  • Mobilizes your wrists and feet
  • Strengthens your legs
  • Improves your stabilizer muscles in the standing leg
  • Improves body alignment
  • Stretches the hamstrings and feet
